“The restaurant bubble is starting to burst.” That was the assessment of Tim Coulston, director of Urban Cookhouse – the latest casualty of the Manchester dining scene, according to yesterday’s Manchester Evening News.
Add them to a list that includes Quill, Burger & Lobster (looking for a smaller location than the giant King Street site it took on less than a year ago), Bourbon & Black, Splendid Kitchen, Grinch.
However, according to MEN What’s On Editor, Simon Binns, increased competition means only the best will survive.
“There’s increased competition, without doubt. The revamped Corn Exchange alone brought 14 new restaurants into the market in one fell swoop. That would be enough for one year in most cities, but by our reckoning, there will be another 30 openings in Manchester in 2016 – at the time of writing.”
“So the bubble isn’t bursting – but the market is levelling out. There’ll be winners and losers,” said Simon.
