Manchester has been named as the UK’s new capital of culture by travel bible Rough Guides, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The popular guidebook series hailed the city centre’s ‘forward-thinking’ attractions and developments, ‘cool’ music scene – and top restaurant chefs.
Rough Guides says Manchester now ‘dominates the headlines with a slew of galleries, venues and festivals’ and hails what lies ahead – a direct reference to plans to build the new ‘Factory’ theatre, a science institute and the government’s ‘northern powerhouse’ proposals.
The report adds: “It’s home to some of the UK’s most forward-thinking developments, one of the coolest music scenes and a fast-expanding range of great hotels and restaurants.”
