Following the publication of HOTREC’s report into online travel agencies, the ALMR has stressed the importance of licensed hospitality businesses to engage with the sector.

HOTREC, the umbrella association of hotels, restaurants and cafes in Europe, has released its second hotel distribution study, showing the dominance of online booking platforms in the European accommodation market.

ALMR Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said: “The manner in which online travel agencies currently dominate the European accommodation market underlines the importance of ensuring that licensed hospitality is properly engaged.

“The online marketplace must be transparent and accessible in order to ensure fairness for both businesses and customers. The ALMR will continue to work closely with HOTREC and other UK stakeholders such as Stay in a Pub to ensure that UK hospitality businesses are aware of the opportunities and able to work with those companies equitably.

“The report also highlights the need for those pubs offering accommodation to ensure that they raise their own profile and visibility on booking websites. We will be working with our members and the wider sector to help raise the profile of pub accommodation as part of our wider strategy to support UK licensed hospitality.”
