Following the LGA’s call for calorie information to be displayed in pubs and restaurants, the ALMR has supported the sector’s efforts to promote healthy options and warned against imposing additional costs on businesses.
ALMR Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said: “The recent efforts being made by licensed premises, through the Responsibility Deal and other voluntary measures, should stand as proof that the sector is serious about helping tackle health harms. Pubs and bars spend a significant amount of time and money ensuring that their customers are presented with all the information to make an informed choice.
“We are, as a sector, committed to tackling health harms but we are concerned about the potential cost implications of the widespread introduction of new menu labelling schemes. Licensed hospitality businesses face tight enough margins without the added cost of additional labelling.
“The sector is happy to play its part and the ALMR is keen to work with local authorities and the LGA, but any new measures must proportionate and cost-effective.”
